A modern twist on the old tradition of Victorian Hair Mourning Jewelry! The tassel of this necklace is made from real human hair, braided following a methods and a pattern from the 1867 “Art of Hairwork”. The detail of this 16-strand twist-chain took about 6 hours of prep and weaving on a traditional weighted table. It has been boiled and baked to hold its shape, it is incredibly durable and, if properly cared for, will stand the test of time. Since it is human hair, the tassel will curl over time, but it can be straightened like the hair on your head.
The majority of this piece were taken from a 1920s French jet mourning necklace in need of repair. For the modern length, elongated onyx beads and small sparkly goldstone fillers were added as needed. The solid bronze snake head was created by a talented artist in Hungary, Modest Birdy 🙂
Length: Loop is 24″ (before the snake head), the Drop is 9″ (after the snake head)
